What Is Halal Teriyaki Sauce?

It is a Japanese sauce that is used for grilling but with halal ingredients i.e. every element is compliant with Islamic rule.

Because authentic Japanese teriyaki sauce has soy sauce and other ingredients that contain alcohol such as sake and/ or mirin. And alcohol is not allowed in Islamic ruling.

However, I’m not going to discuss the ruling in detail. I leave that to the Muslim scholars and Islamic jurists alike.

Here, I just want to share how I make my own sauce without any components that are not halal.

When I went to study in Japan a long time ago, I didn’t realize that even many Japanese soy sauces actually contain alcohol.  In the beginning, my knowledge of Kanji was so limited that I only checked an obvious word of non-halal ingredients. For example, alcohol, pork, mirin, sake, etc. So I misunderstood the ingredients in many foods.

Only after having been there for more than six months and having tried many types of sauces, then I realize that I should have avoided some of them.

It was then my attempts to make my own sauces started. And now after so many years passed, when I feel like making and eating Japanese teriyaki food at home, I tend to mix my own sauces. So I will know what is in it and make sure everything is halal. Just to be on the safe side

After so many trials and errors, I think I am now settled with this recipe. Because I find the taste is quite close to the original sauce.

What Does Teriyaki Sauce Taste Like?

It tastes like soy sauce with a delicate umami flavor and is slightly sweet compared to ordinary Japanese soy sauce. Because it has more elements in it such as spices, ginger, garlic, etc. And the original sauce also contains wine.

What Do You Need The Sauce For?

Teriyaki literally means grilling. So you can brush this sauce over chicken, meat, fish, seafood, etc., and leave them to marinate before you cook them on a barbecue or a griddle pan.

Chicken teriyaki and beef teriyaki are only a few examples of popular dishes that require this sauce. But you can always use the sauce for pretty much anything. I even use it to marinate my vegetables like zucchini and eggplants before I cook them on a griddle pan or on a barbecue.

And if you like you can try this for the vegan protein. Dip some tofu or tempeh in the sauce before you shallow fry them. They are yummy.

Ingredients For Teriyaki Sauce

I must admit that initially, I tried making this sauce by following many recipes. When I came across some that had wine or alcohol in them, I would have to pass them.

Unfortunately, many of them require a long list of ingredients and can take time to make.

So I tried to minimize them and simplify the method by using only two items to recreate this teriyaki sauce without any non-halal item.

Those two ingredients are soy sauce and hoisin sauce.

This is based on Japanese soy sauce. Because it has a distinguished umami flavor compared to other soy sauces. My favorite Japanese soy sauce is this one

This recipe’s ingredients look very simple, but you must be thinking hoisin sauce is not quite a Japanese item. Yes, it is not. But if you go through its elements like the one here, I’m sure you would think it will taste similar if not the same as this Japanese teriyaki sauce. Particularly, when it comes to the spices and sweetness.

And the best of all is that you won’t need extra items such as brown sugar, potato starch, modified corn starch, distilled vinegar, etc. Plus. you don’t have to cook or simmer the ingredients to get a nice thick and sweet marinade sauce.

You can create the sauce in just one minute. Literally. Just put the two together and stir. Then your mixture is ready.

How To Make Halal Teriyaki Sauce

It is a no-brainer task, really. Place both Japanese soy sauce and hoisin sauce in a bowl, then mix well until all is smooth and combined.

When it comes to proportion, it is based on a 1:1 ratio.

In this recipe, I only add one tablespoon of soy sauce to one tablespoon of hoisin sauce. This will make up to two tablespoons of sauce which is enough to marinate the salmon for this teriyaki salmon bowl recipe.

Feel free to multiply the amount as needed.

The only reason I made this recipe in small amounts is because this blog is for those singles or couples who don’t need to cook in big portions. But if you need to do more, you can just easily multiply it.

Teriyaki sauce is one of the most important ingredients in Japanese cuisine, unfortunately the original sauce is not exactly halal. But you can make your very own halal teriyaki sauce now. I promise.
